The year 2021 was very successful for Iceland, they won a high 4th place. Had the competition been a little weaker they would surely have won the first victory. Given that Iceland is a small country, it’s hard to keep that string of good representative songs because the competition is far less.
This year Iceland presents Systur with the song Međ Haekkandi Sol. The peculiarity of this song is that after many years we have a song in the Icelandic language. Many Eurovision fans believe that the film hit Eurovision Song Contest: The Story Of Fire Saga had a great influence on it. Regardless, it’s wonderful to hear a song in Icelandic.
Međ Haekkandi Sol sounds a bit country, which is not bad at all because we rarely have such a style of music at the Eurovision Song Contest. I really like the styling of these singers, they look very charismatic and authentic. While they sing they sound very mystical and relaxing, it is very pleasant to listen to them. The song is good but very average for such a big competition, but I fully support this genre of songs as well as the Icelandic language that sounds wonderful.
Iceland is in the first semifinal group along with Armenia and Croatia which have a similar styles of songs. It is difficult to predict which of these three countries will make it to the finals, but Iceland has a chance to attract an audience precisely because of that authenticity, they sing in their original language and look very country. I wouldn’t underestimate Iceland and I wouldn’t say for sure that it won’t make it to the finals but I don’t think that will happen.
I like the song and I am very comfortable listening to it. Maybe a miracle happens so Iceland makes it to the finals but there is a big crowd in the group. I am pleased with their choice and hope to continue to choose songs in the original language. My rating for the song Međ Haekkandi Sol is 6.5/10.
